I remember being about nine years old when my mom came home with a VHS tape titled Fools Rush In– on the cover were Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek. I grabbed the tape, slid it into our VHS player, and settled in. Even at nine years old, I was no stranger to romantic comedies. In fact, by then they had already become my favorite genre.
About 24 minutes into the movie, a vehicle rolled onto the screen. At first I couldn’t figure out what I was looking at. Was it a Jeep? No. A truck? But why is there no roof? The moment I saw it, I didn’t care what it was called or who made it. I just remember thinking, That’s it. That’s my dream car.
Fast forward to several weeks ago my boyfriend sends me a facebook marketplace ad of this truck. A few weeks prior I had begged for him to get me a truck, (originally I was thinking a small Toyota or Mazda style, you know the little three seater trucks from the 90s) he asks me when he gets home from work “did you see that truck I sent you” to be honest I had only glanced at it and from what I saw it was an awesome truck, very old with a lot of work to be done on it but I really hadn’t paid much attention to it. He then followed it up by saying “isn’t that your dream car?”
At the beginning of our relationship I mentioned in passing to him that I fell in love with this “truck from a movie” and I think we did end up looking it up to see the make but the thing that really gets me is that he had remembered. It was an international scout. The same car Selma drives in fools rush in.
From the posting it just looked like an old truck but once he told me that it was my dream car I rushed to look at the ad on marketplace. It was in fact my dream car. It was a 1978 international scout II . He told me that we could make an offer on it, with a price tag of $5k he felt it was priced right for a fixer and he has been wanting a project car, and a truck in general.
So we got it. The day before our two week trip to Massachusetts might I add- we had a hectic morning of driving to Pacific Beach here in San Diego to make the bill of sale and to tow the truck back to our place. Wasn’t ideal, but we made to make sure we got the truck as the previous owner said others were interested.
Our two week trip east was amazing, but in the back of our minds we both couldn’t wait to get home to the Scout. We have done some small internal changes to the car. Which I talk about on my first scout vlog on my channel, check it out here.
